Who Tops the World Table for Alcohol Consumption? The Winner is…..

I suspect your first ten guesses would be wrong.

No, it’s not Russia, or America. Or UK, although you could be forgiven for ticking the UK box if you could have seen the rate at which the Christmas special offer booze boxes were disappearing through the doors at Tesco.

The table, calculated by the worldpopulationreview.com, is based on the litres of pure alcohol consumed per person in a year. This is the percentage amount of the alcohol in the drink, not the actual pint or measure.

How this can be worked out globally is beyond me, but there are bean-counters everywhere, so we must assume the figures to be fairly accurate.

So the winners and current 2023 champions are — Latvia.

What, no applause ? Come on. Latvia doesn’t win much. Give them a break.

(Jelena Ostapenko did win the 2017 French Open Womens Singles Tennis title, and Mairis Briedis won WBC and WBO Boxing titles at cruiserweight between 2017 and 2019).

This success must be applauded as a national effort, based on ambition and team spirit. All the country must have contributed. One advantage this small Baltic country has is that while the rest of the world toils with ever-growing problems, Latvia has one of the fastest…
